Pivot sweeps 2021 NMA: B2B including coveted best magazine award
The magazine, published by CPA Canada in partnership with Strategic Content Labs, won eight medals in all

The National Media Awards Foundation revealed the 2021 NMA: B2B winners on Thursday with CPA Canada’s Pivot leading the medal haul with six golds and two silver, including the prestigious Best Magazine prize for the second time in the publication’s short history.
Strategic Content Labs (SCL), a division of St. Joseph Communications, partnered with Chartered Professional Accounts of Canada to relaunch, rename and re-envision the organization’s flagship publication.
“Since Pivot’s inception 3 years ago, we’ve championed value-based business practices that adapt to change to drive real economic and social benefit, actions only amplified in importance given the global pandemic,” said Heather Whyte, publisher of Pivot.
“I am very proud of our team who repeatedly pivoted to change the editorial lineup and to showcase the amazing Canadian leaders who were able to help Canada—and the world—through this unprecedented crisis.”
‘Magazine Article. May Contain Sentences.’ (by Shawn Micallef and handling editor Lara Zarum with art direction by Adam Cholewa) unearthing the brilliant marketing strategy behind No Frills’ beloved “No Name” brand received both gold (in Best Profile of a Company) and silver (in Best Art Direction: Single Article or Opening Spread) medals.
Pivot also picked up golds in the Best Column or Regularly Featured Department (‘Purpose Driver: The Giver; Sweet Success; The Next Generation’ by Rebecca Fleming, Melissa Buote, Jason Kirby and handling editor Lara Zarum), Best Profile of a Person (‘Unbroken’ by Denis Trottier, Lara Zarum and handling editor Luc Rinaldi), Best Photograph (‘Mr. Clean’ by Troy Moth), Best Series of Articles (‘The Future of Work: Signed, Sealed, Delivered; No Fixed Address, Safe Spaces’ by Jason McBride and handling editor Lara Zarum) categories and silver in the Best How-To Article or Series of Articles category (‘The Trust Crisis: The Trust Crisis; Mr. Clean; Gimme Shelter’ by Peter Shawn Taylor, Adrienne Tanner, Micah Toub and handling editor Luc Rinaldi).
In total, Pivot had 13 nominations, more than any other publication.
“Strategic Content Labs is very proud of its role in producing a great magazine and helping raise important issues with CPA members and the broader Canadian public,” said Douglas Kelly, president of SCL.
“Member and public communication are critical for any association, and SCL can help deepen that member engagement and raise the wider profile for the association,” he said.
CAA Magazine, also produced by SCL for CAA clubs across Canada, won gold for Best Cover for ‘The Ultimate Canadian Bucket List,’ (art by Mya McNulty and Angela Southern).
